In our Meet the Winemaker series, MOVIN Agency speaks with the people behind remarkable wineries across Europe and beyond. This time we travel to Moldova, a country with centuries of winemaking heritage that is increasingly gaining recognition on the international stage.
We spoke with Constantin Sevciuc, CEO and founder of Chateau Cristi Winery, about the philosophy behind the estate, the unique terroir of southern Moldova, and the winery’s growing international presence.

MOVIN Agency: Constantin, could you introduce Chateau Cristi and the story behind the winery?
Constantin Sevciuc: Chateau Cristi was founded with the ambition of showcasing the authentic character of Moldovan terroir through elegant and expressive wines. Moldova has a long and proud winemaking tradition, but in recent years we have seen a new wave of wineries focusing strongly on quality, innovation, and international visibility.
Our goal is not simply to produce good wines, but to create wines with a clear identity. Chateau Cristi focuses on elegant, terroir-driven wines from southern Moldova, often combining international grape varieties with the distinctive character of local varieties. At the same time, we carefully integrate innovation into our work - whether in vineyard management or cellar practices - always with the aim of improving precision while respecting the authenticity of the terroir.
Our philosophy at Chateau Cristi is based on combining this deep-rooted tradition with modern winemaking techniques. From vineyard management to cellar practices, every step is carefully controlled to ensure that our wines truly reflect their origin.
The Cristi family legacy plays an important role in shaping our approach. Winemaking here is not simply a business; it is a continuation of a tradition that values craftsmanship, patience, and attention to detail.

MOVIN Agency: Your vineyards are located in southern Moldova. What makes this region particularly suitable for viticulture?
Constantin Sevciuc: Our vineyards are located in southern Moldova, in a picturesque area not far from the Danube basin and Lake Cahul. This region benefits from a unique combination of continental climate conditions and moderating influences coming from nearby waterways.
The area enjoys a high number of sunny days throughout the growing season, providing the vines with abundant light and warmth necessary for full grape development. Summers are typically warm, which helps the grapes achieve excellent sugar accumulation and phenolic ripeness.
At the same time, nights tend to be noticeably cooler, especially toward the end of the ripening period. These significant day–night temperature variations allow the grapes to retain their natural acidity and aromatic freshness.
As a result, we are able to achieve a very precise balance between technical maturity and phenolic maturity - a balance that is essential for producing wines with both structure and elegance.
The soils in our vineyards are primarily clay and limestone, relatively poor in nutrients. This forces the vines to develop deeper root systems, which contributes to greater concentration of aromas and flavors in the grapes. Our vineyards lie between 80 and 134 meters above sea level, and the varied exposure of the plots allows each grape variety to express its character in a distinctive way.

MOVIN Agency: What grape varieties define the Chateau Cristi portfolio?
Constantin Sevciuc: Our vineyards cover approximately 130 hectares, and we grow a combination of well-known international varieties alongside native Moldovan grapes.
Among the international varieties, we cultivate Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, and Pinot Noir, which perform exceptionally well in our climate and soils.
At the same time, we are proud to work with traditional Moldovan varieties such as Feteasca Neagră and Rara Neagră, which are an important part of our national winemaking identity. These indigenous grapes bring distinctive character and authenticity to our wines.
We use only estate-grown grapes, which allows us to maintain complete control over quality from the vineyard to the bottle.
MOVIN Agency: Could you tell us about some of your flagship wines?
Constantin Sevciuc: Among our most recognized wines is our Chardonnay Barrel Fermented, which expresses the elegance and complexity that our white terroir can deliver. Careful fermentation and maturation in oak barrels help build texture and depth while maintaining freshness.
Another important wine in our portfolio is the Malbec–Saperavi blend, a combination that reflects the bold and distinctive character of southern Moldova. The structure of Saperavi and the fruit intensity of Malbec create a wine with strong personality and balance.More recently we introduced the Chateau Cristi Family Reserve range — a limited and more exclusive collection representing the highest expression of selected vineyards and careful barrel aging. The range currently includes Chateau Cristi Family Reserve Saperavi and Chateau Cristi Family Reserve Cabernet Franc, wines that highlight both the power and refinement that our southern terroir can offer.

MOVIN Agency: What principles guide your winemaking philosophy?
Constantin Sevciuc: Our philosophy is built around precision and respect for the vineyard.
In the vineyards we focus on careful canopy management and strict yield control in order to ensure that each grape reaches optimal maturity. Lower yields allow the vines to concentrate their energy into fewer grapes, which results in more expressive wines.
In the cellar we work with a high level of precision during fermentation and maceration, carefully monitoring temperature, extraction, and timing in order to preserve the natural character of each variety and vineyard parcel.
Oak aging is also used selectively. Our goal is not to dominate the wine with wood, but to support its structure and complexity while allowing the fruit and terroir to remain at the center.
For us, every stage - from vineyard to barrel to bottle - is part of a continuous effort to create wines that are balanced, expressive, and true to their origin.

MOVIN Agency: Chateau Cristi wines are already present in several international markets. Where can consumers find your wines today?
Constantin Sevciuc: Export has always been a key pillar of our strategy. Today our wines are available in a number of international markets including Romania, the Netherlands, South Korea, Japan, and Brazil.
Each market has its own wine culture and consumer preferences, which makes international work both challenging and exciting. Seeing Moldovan wines appreciated by consumers across different continents is extremely rewarding for our team.
We strongly believe that Moldova still has enormous potential to further expand its presence on the global wine market.
MOVIN Agency: Your wines have also received international recognition. Could you tell us more about that?
Constantin Sevciuc: Yes, we are very proud that our wines have received awards at several prestigious international competitions, including Decanter World Wine Awards, Mundus Vini, the Berliner Wine Trophy, and the Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge.
These recognitions are important for us because they demonstrate that Moldovan wines can compete successfully with producers from well-known wine regions around the world.
At Chateau Cristi we focus strongly on quality rather than quantity. Vineyard practices such as yield limitation help ensure that each grape reaches optimal maturity, allowing us to produce wines that truly express their origin.
Every bottle should tell the story of our terroir, our heritage, and the dedication of the people working behind the scenes.

MOVIN Agency: Finally, how do you see the future of Moldovan wine internationally?
Constantin Sevciuc: I believe the future is very bright. Moldova has exceptional natural conditions for viticulture, a long history of winemaking, and a new generation of passionate producers who are dedicated to quality.
As international consumers become more curious about emerging wine regions, Moldova has a wonderful opportunity to share its unique wines with the world.
At Chateau Cristi, we are proud to contribute to that story and to represent the character and potential of Moldovan wine on the global stage.
