Discover the story of Heumann Winery through the words of owner and winemaker Erhard Heumann. From a small vineyard near Siklós to internationally acclaimed wines, this interview reveals the passion, innovation, and terroir behind one of Villány’s leading wineries.
MOVIN Agency:Erhard, thank you for joining us for our Meet the Winemaker series. To start, could you tell us a little about the story of Heumann Winery?
Erhard Heumann: It all began as a passion project. My wife Evelyne and I came to Hungary in the late 1990s and fell in love with the Villány wine region. We started with a small vineyard near Siklós, and over the years expanded step by step. What began as a dream has grown into a family winery producing internationally recognized wines.
MOVIN Agency:Villány is often described as the “Bordeaux of Hungary.” What makes this region and your terroir so special?
Erhard Heumann:Villány and Siklós are blessed with an exceptional climate for red grape varieties—long, warm summers and protected slopes. The soils are a mix of limestone, loess, and clay, which give both structure and elegance to the wines. Our vineyards on the southern slopes and also on the plateau of the Villány hills benefit from ideal exposure, producing grapes with ripeness, concentration, and balance.
MOVIN Agency: Your portfolio covers a wide spectrum—from crisp whites to powerful reds. Could you highlight some of your signature wines?
Erhard Heumann: Certainly. Our Rajnai Rizling has gained recognition for its minerality and freshness—Decanter scored the 2019 vintage 92 points. When it comes to reds, Terra Tartaro and La Trinità Villányi Franc are truly our flagship wines. La Trinità has even been served at the Hungarian Parliament for visiting dignitaries, while Terra Tartaro represents the pinnacle of what our vineyards can achieve—recently scoring 95 points from James Suckling.
Blue Secret and Lagona, represent the more approachable side of our range, offering outstanding quality and precision while remaining true to our estate’s style.
A particularly exciting new chapter for us began in 2024, when we started crafting white wines from red grape varieties—Merlot, Kékfrankos, and Syrah. This innovative project has opened up a whole new dimension of expression for our winery, and we’re thrilled to continue developing these wines in 2025.
MOVIN Agency: Those are impressive achievements. Your wines have been showered with awards in recent years—what does that mean for you as a winemaker?
Erhard Heumann: Awards are not the goal in themselves, but they are wonderful recognition of our team’s work and the uniqueness of our terroir. From Decanter World Wine Awards to Mundus Vini, VinCE, and international critics like Jancis Robinson, James Suckling, and Andreas Larsson.
MOVIN Agency: Speaking of the global stage, where can wine lovers outside Hungary find Heumann wines?
Erhard Heumann: Export has always been part of our vision. Today, our wines are enjoyed in markets such as the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and several European countries, and we are steadily expanding further. It’s important for us to show international wine lovers what Villány has to offer.
MOVIN Agency: Finally, what continues to inspire you after more than two decades in Villány?
Erhard Heumann: It’s the combination of tradition and discovery. Every vintage is a new challenge, and every vineyard parcel teaches us something. I am inspired by Villány’s potential—it is a small region with a big personality—and by the chance to share our wines and the story of this land with more people around the world.
MOVIN Agency: Thank you, Erhard, for sharing your journey with us. We raise a glass to Heumann Winery’s continued success!

Who wouldn’t enjoy sipping a glass of Portugieser or RedY in the evening? And if you have enough time to appreciate them, how about an elegant Cabernet or Merlot at the weekend or on a holiday? However, make sure you bear in mind that great Villány wines need time, both in the cellar and in the glass.
