Kindzmarauli is a subregion of Kakheti in the far east of Georgia near the border with Russia. It is also one of the country's 18 registered wine appellations. This was created specifically for traditional, naturally semi-sweet red wines made from the Saperavi grape variety. They are typically dark in color and softly fruity. The Kindzmarauli zone is located on the southwest-facing bank of the Alazani river, in the foothills of the Caucasus mountains. On the opposite side of the valley lies the Tsinandali appellation. Soils are more stony and less rich than other parts of Kaktheti. This gives higher levels of minerality and acidity in the wines; these characteristics are balanced by residual sugar.
