János Szekretár sr. viticulturist came up with the idea of a premium wine estate in 2017, after 40 years of planting and cultivating hunderds of hectares of grape in Villány and Szekszárd regions. He felt that the time has come to return to the roots: he wanted to be in direct contact with the vines again, work in his beautiful 134 year-old press house, in a vineyard of a controllable size. János Szekretár jr., manager and winemaker, wholeheartedly supported his father’s idea and has always wanted to make outstanding red wines that reflect his excellent taste, premium wines of which he is truly proud. Their maximalism and perseverance is also reflected in their other passion, sports: they have many Marathons behind them.

What makes our wine different from the rest? Because we make it. We don’t do anything special with it, we just do everything, when we have to, the way we have to. Cover the fermentation vat and wash all equipment after work as if you were putting it away for the winter, even though we will be using it again the next day. At every moment, we give the most we can, to the maximum, in every job, in every process.

The Szekretár estate is located on Nyéki Hill in the southern part of the Szekszárd wine region. The variety composition of the estate: 1.4 ha Merlot, 0.6 ha Cabernet sauvignon and 0.6 ha Kékfrankos, which is grown all year round id. Szekretár János takes care with the utmost expertise and attention, thus ensuring a healthy and high-quality raw material. It regulates the yield of vines by manual pruning, so it produces a much fuller and more succulent fruit. The plantation is completely free of herbicides. The life of the vineyard-selected wines is accompanied by János Szekretár Jr. in the press house built in 1888, which has a serious historical past. The best Szekretár red wines are born in open baths with traditional hand-picking, aged for 12 months in Hungarian oak barrels.
