In 1994 the Count Degenfeld family successfully revived its wine estate in the Tokaji wine region following their over 150-year-old tradition. Winemaking has always included the love of nature, respect for traditions and all this combined with the modern technology. Our chief winemaker produces all the varietal wines clearly introducing the leading grape varieties of the region – the Furmint, Harslevelu and Yellow Muscat - and making sweet Tokaji wine specialities including the famous Aszú wines.
For our wines, all the grapes and aszú berries are harvested from the historical vineyards located in Mád and Tarcal. Since 2009, our vineyards of 35 hectares have been managed by certified organic cultivation. We are using self-produced compost for improving the soil structure and fertilizing our plantations.
The Gróf Degenfeld estate cultivates the three main grape varieties of the Tokaji wine region (Furmint, Hárslevelű, Yellow Muscat) as well as the three supplementary grape varieties, Kövérszőlő, Zéta and Kabar.
"No doubt we are producing the most labour-demanding wine in the whole world with the same unique technology for 500 years."
The botrytis-affected berries with concentrated aromas, having been dried out by the wind and the sun are picked individually by hand. One can pick 20-25 kg a day in an excellent vintage. The berries are soaked in fermenting base wine, and then they are pressed and aged in Hungarian oak barrels to achieve the perfect harmony and balance. The aszú wine made with this technology is a miracle giving unforgettable experience to everyone for over many decades.
