The Codru wine region, located in the very heart of Moldova, is a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) area renowned for its unique terroir and high-quality wines. Its temperate continental climate, with mild winters, long warm summers and relatively low rainfall, creates excellent conditions for viticulture. The fragmented landscape, shaped by valleys, ravines, cliffs, and gentle slopes intersected by rivers such as the Prut, Nistru, and Răut, ensures good sun exposure and natural drainage. Rich chernozem soils dominate the region, complemented by brown and grey forest soils, providing a fertile foundation for diverse grape varieties. Around 63% of the vineyards are planted with white grapes and 37% with red, with leading varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Rhein Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc. Codru is especially known for its elegant white and sparkling wines. The whites typically show a lemon-yellow to golden color, marked by freshness, minerality, floral and fruity aromas, and a lively, summer-fruit character. Sparkling wines, whether white, rosé, or red, are distinguished by fine bubbles, abundant mousse, delicate floral bouquets, and a round, ample taste. Red wines from the region display ruby to cherry hues with purple reflections that evolve into brick tones with age, offering refined aromas of red berries, wild plums, and sweet spices, with a velvety, supple texture. The region also produces liqueur wines with rich, complex bouquets that may include notes of dried fruit, nuts, flowers, and chocolate. Together, the interplay of climate, soils, and landscape makes Codru one of Moldova’s most distinctive and celebrated wine regions, capable of producing wines of remarkable freshness, elegance, and character.
