Carastelec Sparkling Winery is Romania’s first winery created with a dedicated focus on producing premium sparkling and semi-sparkling wines. Located in the historic Crișana wine region of northern Transylvania—one of the area’s oldest viticultural zones—the estate benefits from a moderate continental climate, significant diurnal temperature variation, and a south-facing, clay-rich slope near Măgura Șimleului Mountain. These conditions, together with the vineyard’s amphitheatre-like topography, create an optimal environment for cultivating high-acidity fruit ideal for méthode traditionnelle sparkling wine.
The 22-hectare vineyard, planted in 2011, was designed from the ground up specifically for sparkling wine production. Noble varieties traditionally associated with Champagne, along with Rhein Riesling for still wines, were selected to match the terroir. High-density planting (6,250 vines/ha) drives root competition, pushing the vines deeper into the mica-rich subsoils and enhancing the mineral structure and finesse of the wines. The proximity of the vineyard to the winery minimizes grape transport, ensuring optimal fruit integrity at harvest.
Carastelec’s location is rooted in centuries of viticultural history. The Crișana region, situated between the Mureș, Someș and Tisa rivers and sheltered by the Western Carpathians, has evidence of winemaking dating back to Roman times. Carastelec village itself was first recorded in 1241, with documented vineyard holdings from the 17th century linked to Princess Zsófia Báthori. This long-standing tradition reinforces the region’s reputation for producing elegant, vibrant wines defined by freshness and complexity.
The winery continues this legacy with a clear, unwavering commitment to world-class quality. Equipped since 2013 with full technology for producing bottle-fermented sparkling wines, the facility operates on renewable solar and geothermal energy, reflecting a modern, sustainability-driven approach. From site selection to vineyard management, every decision—guided originally by renowned Hungarian oenologist Tibor Gál—has been executed with meticulous precision and an enduring focus on crafting high-quality sparkling wines that express the unique character of Carastelec’s terroir.
