The Goriška Brda wine region lies on the western border between Slovenia and Italy, forming part of Slovenia’s broader Primorska wine region. Brda is on the Slovenian side, while Goriška is on the Italian side. Nestled at the foothills of the Julian Alps between mountain peaks and the Adriatic Sea, it is one of Slovenia’s smallest wine districts, prized for its focus on quality over quantity. Viticulture here dates back to ancient times, with Celtic and Illyrian roots placing it among the world’s oldest wine-producing areas. In the 20th century, political changes divided the territory between Italy and Slovenia. The landscape is hilly and often terraced, with a warm climate moderated by sea and alpine breezes, though the cold Bora winds in November can threaten the vines. Rainfall is higher than on the coast, and soils consist mainly of shale, marl, and sandstone, offering excellent drainage. Rebula (Ribolla) is the flagship grape, representing about 25% of production and cultivated here for over 750 years. Other key varieties include Tokaj, Pinot Grigio, Refosco, and international grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Noir.
