Slovenska Istra is the southernmost wine district of Slovenia’s Primorska region, located in the southwest between the Adriatic cities of Koper and Piran, with Koper as its main town. It lies about 107 km from Ljubljana and 85 km from Rijeka, Croatia, and hosts the annual Refosco Feast in Marezige. Viticulture here dates back to the 3rd century, when the Romans called the area Capri. Through history, it was linked to the Venetian Republic, became a free commune in 1186, later came under Napoleonic France, the Austrian Empire, Italy, and finally Yugoslavia after 1954. Winegrowing has been a continuous tradition throughout these centuries. The region’s Mediterranean climate brings warm, dry summers and mild winters, influenced by winds such as Burja, Jugo, and Maestral. Vineyards range from sea level to 250 meters in altitude. Rainfall varies from 900–1000 mm along the coast to up to 1300 mm inland. The predominant soil is flysch mixed with limestone, which suits the region’s signature grape, Refosco (Refok). Refosco accounts for over 45% of production, showing richer, softer character near the coast and deeper, gamier flavors inland due to greater day–night temperature differences. Other varieties include Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malvasia, Chardonnay, Rebula, Rumeni Muškat, Pinot Noir, and Syrah.
