Szekszárd, Hungary
In the dark depths of the cellar, it stirs lazily, casting its crimson glow when a candle flickers... This is a wine with deep-rooted traditions, which we firmly believe originate from Szekszárd. A wine that reminded poet János Garay of life itself. A wine where past and present intertwine in close alliance, guiding the way toward the future. It’s also the wine we were among the first to craft when the opportunity arose. A wine that marks a milestone for us, commemorating 1993 when Ferenc Vesztergombi was honored as Winemaker of the Year. Since 1991, we have once again been producing Szekszárdi Bikavér. Its composition has remained unchanged over the years: Kékfrankos provides the body and backbone, Cabernet Sauvignon brings spice and depth, Merlot adds softness and charm, while Kadarka gives it its soul. If you listen closely, Bikavér tells tales of centuries past, traditions, countless hours of vineyard work, and perhaps even a touch of the essence of Szekszárd. We age it for a long period in traditional large oak barrels (10-50 hl). Over two years of barrel aging, the individual varieties harmonize, evolve, and become a unified whole. We believe Bikavér has no place in barrique barrels. For this traditional wine, we steadfastly adhere to our time-honored practices.
