Eger wine region has long been one of Hungary’s most historic and distinctive wine regions. Known for its volcanic soils, dramatic hillside vineyards, and iconic blends, Eger has built its reputation on wines that combine elegance with structure. Today, a new generation of winemakers is redefining the region’s identity while staying true to its traditions.

One of the most promising voices of this generation is Dániel Korózs, owner and winemaker of Korózs Winery. Young, ambitious, and deeply connected to his vineyards, he is crafting terroir-driven wines that are gaining recognition both in Hungary and internationally.

In this edition of MOVIN Agency’s Meet the Winemaker series, we spoke with Dániel about the character of Eger, his philosophy of winemaking, and his ambitions for the future.

MOVIN Agency: Dániel, how did your journey into winemaking begin?

Dániel Korózs: Wine has always been part of my life, but the winery itself started as a small family project. In 2012, I decided to focus fully on developing our own estate and vineyards in Eger.

Since then, step by step, we have grown into a boutique winery producing wines exclusively from our own vineyards. Being a family-owned estate allows us to stay flexible and focused on quality rather than volume.

MOVIN Agency: Eger is known for its diverse terroir. How does this influence your wines?

Dániel Korózs: The terroir of Eger is extremely complex. Our vineyards are located on soils rich in volcanic tuff and limestone, which provide structure, minerality, and freshness to the wines.

Some of our vineyards are located on higher-altitude slopes, where the cooler microclimate helps preserve acidity and aromatic complexity. This diversity allows us to produce wines that truly reflect the character of the region.

For me, terroir is the foundation of everything we do in the vineyard and the winery.

MOVIN Agency: Two wines define the region internationally: Egri Csillag and Egri Bikavér. What do these wines represent for you?

Dániel Korózs: Both wines are essential for the identity of Eger.

Egri Bikavér is the historic flagship red blend of the region. When it is balanced and well crafted, it shows complexity, spice, freshness, and elegance. For us, Bikavér represents tradition and the heritage of Eger.

Its white counterpart, Egri Csillag, expresses the brighter side of the region. It is aromatic, vibrant, and very versatile with food, which makes it especially popular in restaurants.

Both wines allow us to showcase the diversity of Eger’s vineyards.

MOVIN Agency: In addition to regional blends, you also produce Syrah. Why this variety?

Dániel Korózs: Syrah adapts surprisingly well to the conditions in Eger. The climate allows the grape to develop spice and complexity while maintaining good acidity.

For me, Syrah is an exciting opportunity to show another dimension of the region. While Bikavér represents tradition, Syrah allows us to experiment with a more international style that still reflects the local terroir.

MOVIN Agency: Your wines are increasingly appearing on the wine lists of top Hungarian restaurants. What role does gastronomy play for your winery?

Dániel Korózs: Gastronomy is very important to us. Many Hungarian fine-dining restaurants now feature our wines, and that is a great confirmation of our style.

We focus on producing wines that work well with food – balanced, elegant, and expressive rather than heavy. This approach fits very naturally into restaurant wine programs.

At the same time, export is becoming increasingly important. We would like to bring the wines of Eger to more international markets in the coming years.

MOVIN Agency: What is your long-term vision for Korózs Winery?

Dániel Korózs: Our goal is to continue developing the winery while keeping it boutique and quality-focused.

We want to grow gradually, strengthen our presence in export markets, and continue refining wines that represent the terroir of Eger as authentically as possible.

For me, the most important thing is that every bottle reflects our vineyards and the character of the region.

Moldova
Moldova’s winemaking heritage is steeped in legend, one of the most famous being the tale of the storks. During a Turkish siege near Grodieshti, the fortress defenders were weakened by hunger and thirst. Suddenly, hundreds of storks appeared, driving back the enemy with their wings and dropping bundles of grapes to the soldiers below. Revived by the fruit, the defenders repelled the attack, and the stork became a lasting symbol of luck and prosperity. Today, the stork with grapes is the emblem of Moldovan viticulture and features in the logo of the Viticulture Association. Moldova’s vineyard area spans around 114,000 hectares, divided into three distinct wine regions, each with its own terroir and specialties.
