Neusiedlersee DAC lies in the political district of Neusiedl am See (excluding Winden and Jois), covering around 6,000 ha. The region is Austria’s largest DAC by vineyard area, with around 1,400 ha planted to Zweigelt, the key red variety. The Pannonian climate—hot, dry summers and cold winters—is moderated by Lake Neusiedl, which helps maintain acidity and enhances fruit aromas. Soils vary from sandy loam and gravel to saline and limestone-rich types. Neusiedlersee DAC wines made from Zweigelt are dry, fruity, spicy, with cherry and berry notes. DAC Reserve wines show more depth and ageing potential. Sweet Prädikatsweine—including Spätlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese, and Trockenbeerenauslese—are also part of the DAC, often made from Welschriesling, especially in the humid, fog-prone Seewinkel subregion, where noble rot (Botrytis) thrives. Other permitted grapes include Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, and aromatic white varieties. Red wines from Blaufränkisch, St. Laurent, and Pinot Noir are also produced under the broader Burgenland origin. The area is a major wine tourism destination, offering cycling, riding, water sports, and cultural events at venues like Schloss Halbturn. The region's terrain includes flat gravel plains (Parndorfer Platte, Seewinkel), built on ancient Danube valley floors and marine sediments from Lake Pannon. Soils are mostly quartz-rich gravels, overlaid with loam, with varying levels of limestone and dolomite.
