The Villány wine region in southern Hungary has long been synonymous with powerful red wines, family traditions, and a deep connection to the land. Few wineries embody these values as authentically as Günzer Family Estate, where generations have dedicated themselves to producing wines that express the unique character of Villány.

As part of our Meet the Winemaker series, MOVIN Agency sat down with Norman Günzer to learn more about his family's winemaking journey, the distinctive Villány PDO classification system, and one of the estate's flagship wines, the remarkable Ördögárok Cuvée 2020.

MOVIN Agency: Norman, thank you for joining us. Could you start by telling us a little about your family and the history of the winery?

Norman Günzer: Thank you for having me. Family is at the heart of everything we do. The Günzer family has been involved in viticulture in Villány for generations, and wine has always been a part of our daily life. What started as a small family operation has grown into a respected estate, but our philosophy remains unchanged: we focus on quality, authenticity, and preserving the traditions of Villány while continuously improving our vineyards and winemaking practices.

Growing up among the vines naturally shaped my passion for wine. Today, I am proud to continue the work started by previous generations while bringing my own vision to the winery.

MOVIN Agency: Villány is often considered Hungary's premier red wine region. What makes it so special?

Norman Günzer: Villány has a unique combination of climate, soil, and tradition. We are fortunate to have one of the warmest wine-growing areas in Hungary, with a significant number of sunshine hours and a long growing season. These conditions allow red grape varieties to achieve excellent ripeness while maintaining balance and elegance.

Our vineyards are planted on limestone, loess, and clay-rich soils that contribute complexity and structure to the wines. The region's rolling hills and diverse exposures create numerous microclimates, allowing each vineyard site to express its own personality. For me, Villány is where power meets elegance. Our wines can be concentrated and age-worthy, yet they always retain freshness and a strong sense of place.

MOVIN Agency: The Villány PDO system plays an important role in protecting the region's identity. Could you explain its significance?

Norman Günzer: Absolutely. The Villány PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) is much more than a certification. It is the region's most important quality guarantee.

The system ensures that wines bearing the Villány name genuinely reflect the character, traditions, and terroir of the region. It is a closed quality framework that establishes strict production standards, vineyard regulations, and winemaking requirements.

Within the PDO system, wines are classified into three quality levels:

Villány PDO Classic

These wines focus on fruit purity, harmony, and accessibility. Yields are limited to maintain quality, while the wines showcase varietal character, silky tannins, and balanced structure. Oak influence is subtle and never dominates the wine.

Villány PDO Premium

This category represents more concentrated and complex wines. Lower vineyard yields result in greater intensity and depth, while oak maturation becomes a more noticeable element. These wines clearly express both the Villány terroir and the elegance that defines the region.

Villány PDO Super Premium

This is the highest level of the classification system and is reserved exclusively for Cabernet Franc, known locally as Villányi Franc. These wines represent the pinnacle of Villány winemaking, combining exceptional vineyard selection, very low yields, extensive ageing, and remarkable complexity. They are designed to capture the essence of Villány's unique terroir and demonstrate why Cabernet Franc has become the region's flagship variety.

MOVIN Agency: Speaking of flagship wines, the Ördögárok Cuvée has become one of the estate's most recognised wines. What makes it so special?

Norman Günzer: Ördögárok is truly a unique vineyard. The name translates roughly as "Devil's Ditch," and it is one of Villány's most prestigious sites.

The vineyard itself forms a natural amphitheatre of around 60 hectares, creating a distinctive microclimate that helps achieve outstanding grape ripeness year after year. The clay-rich loess soils contribute structure, depth, and beautifully mature tannins.

Our Ördögárok Cuvée 2020 is composed of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. What makes this wine particularly special is that every vintage comes from the same carefully selected vineyard parcels, allowing the site itself to remain the central focus.

We work with extremely low yields, around 0.5 kilograms per vine, which results in exceptional concentration and flavour intensity. The goal is not simply power but balance-capturing the richness of the fruit while preserving elegance and vineyard character.

MOVIN Agency: How would you describe the 2020 vintage?

Norman Günzer: The 2020 vintage gave us excellent fruit quality. The wine offers layers of black cherry, plum, blackberry, and subtle spice, supported by ripe tannins and a long, structured finish.

What I particularly appreciate is its harmony. It has the concentration expected from a top Villány red, but it also shows freshness and precision. It is enjoyable now, yet it has significant ageing potential.

MOVIN Agency: Looking ahead, what is your vision for the future of Günzer Family Estate?

Norman Günzer: Our vision is simple: to continue producing wines that authentically represent Villány while constantly raising quality standards.

We are investing in our vineyards, focusing on sustainable practices, and exploring ways to express individual vineyard sites even more clearly. At the same time, we remain committed to our family values. Wine is about people, heritage, and creating experiences that bring generations together.

MOVIN Agency: Finally, what would you like international wine lovers to know about Villány?

Norman Günzer: I would encourage them to discover Villány with an open mind. Many people know the great wine regions of France, Italy, or Spain, but Villány offers something genuinely distinctive.

Our wines combine Central European elegance with the richness of a warm-climate red wine region. They tell the story of our land, our families, and our traditions. Once people experience authentic Villány wines, they often become lifelong ambassadors of the region.

MOVIN Agency: Norman, thank you for sharing your story and giving us a deeper insight into the Günzer family, the Villány wine region, and your remarkable wines. We wish you continued success and look forward to following the next chapter of your journey.

Norman Günzer: Thank you very much. It was a pleasure to share our story. We are always happy to welcome wine lovers to Villány and hope that our wines continue to bring the spirit of our region to tables around the world.

Don’t forget to discover the wines of Günzer Winery.
