Slavonia & the Croatian Danube is Croatia’s largest and easternmost wine region, stretching from Virovitica and Daruvar in the west to the Danube and Baranja in the east. Enclosed by the Danube, Drava and Sava rivers, the region benefits from a continental climate with warm summers and cold winters, alongside volcanic and loamy soils that provide ideal conditions for high-quality grape growing. This area has a long history of viticulture, dating back to Roman times, and today it is known for producing large volumes of wines that combine excellent quality with affordability. The vineyards of Kutjevo, Ilok, Erdut, Baranja and Daruvar are among the region’s most respected. The most iconic white variety is Graševina (Welschriesling), now considered indigenous to the area. Graševina here shows a wide stylistic range – from light, crisp and refreshing wines to more opulent, structured versions, depending on site and vinification. Other important white varieties include Traminac (Gewürztraminer), Riesling, and Pinot Gris, especially in areas like Ilok, where the grapes develop intense aromas and long finishes thanks to warm days and cool nights. While historically known for its white wines, red wine production is growing steadily, with varieties such as Frankovka (Blaufränkisch), Zweigelt, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. Frankovka thrives in the region’s rich, well-draining soils and sunlight-rich conditions, producing fruit-forward, structured wines with vibrant acidity, making it one of Croatia’s most promising reds. In terms of style, the region’s wines are generally fresh, aromatic and balanced, showcasing both regional character and varietal typicity. Whether white or red, wines from Slavonia & the Croatian Danube are appreciated for their purity, structure and food-friendly nature, making them increasingly recognized on both local and international markets.
